3005 Burpees for Life
We want to thank Steve O’Brien who completed 3005 Burpees in his fundraiser ‘Burpees for Life’. Its was a huge physical challenge and an extremely generous act. Leandro loves to train appreciates the difficulty of this challenge!

Steve’s message:

Hi Leandro,
I have just deposited $3400 that I raised doing the burpees for life fundraiser for you. I really hope this can help you in some way. Your a great inspiration to us all and thinking how strong you are and how you never gave up got me through the grueling 7hrs40min of burpees completing a total of 3005. Best of luck for the future and I hope your recovery just gets better and better.

Sunshine Cup – A day to raise hope and money for Barata

We would also like to thank the The Brazilian Comunity in Sydney for organizing both the ‘Sunshine Cup’ & ‘Futebol das Piranhas’ to raise some funds for Leandro; between both tournaments they raised a grand total of $1927! The Brazilian community in Australia is praying and wishing Leandro a successful recovery. Thank you to everyone who participated & donated, and to Alexandre Rubial for putting together this video:

Last week on  29^th April Leandro celebrated his birthday and he was very happy that he was able to spend the weekend at home with family and friends. He is doing very well very well with his physiotherapy and as you can see from the photos he is progressing well.

He told us that it looks at the website frequently and that it makes him feel very happy. So thank you everyone for your messages!

These photos were taken at Zara clinic where he is staying at the moment, the lady sitting with Leandro is his Grandmother. The beach photos are taken at Praia Pitanga in Salvador Bahia, with his friends, his father Arlindo and his brother.

Since Leandro’s return to Brazil there have been many achievements to celebrate that we are so pleased to share with you.

The tracheotomy tube that was assisting Leandro to breathe for the trip home has been removed for the past 2 weeks. Not only is he breathing 100% independently but he is also now able to speak.

Leandro’s health has been so stable that he has been living at home for the past week. He is planning to remain there for the next few weeks before moving to a private rehabilitation hospital to continue his physical rehabilitation.

 Most excitingly Leandro has been able to sit upright unassisted!

 Leandro and his family are all in wonderful spirits and appreciate all the support they have been shown by friends & strangers alike.

We are all amazed at the speed of Leandro’s progress and are full of positivity for his future, he is an inspiration to us all.

On behalf of Leandro’s family and friends, we would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers, well wishes and donations during this difficult time. The response to Leandro’s story on Bondi Rescue has been overwhelming since Leandro’s accident in December we have raised approximately $50,000 to assist with Leandro’s on-going rehabilitation. We are very grateful to the staff at Royal North Shore Hospital for their warmth and genuine care for Leandro over the past three months and to the Bondi Rescue lifeguards and crew for all their support.

Leandro is now able to breathe on his own (without the support of machines). As yet, he has no movement in his arms or legs, however he does have the occasional sensation in his limbs and we remain positive and hopeful. Leandro is an exceptionally strong and special human being and his positive attitude and calm spirit are a constant inspiration to us all.

Today (March 14) Leandro left Australia and is on his way back home to Salvador, Bahia in Brasil with a Medevac team organised through SOS International. He will be greatly missed by his Australian family and we will continue to keep in contact with Leandro and his family and do everything we can to support him. Several of us have plans to visit him in Brasil later this year.
